NFPS Approved techniques

Our Positive Handling course — sometimes called Restraint Training, Physical Intervention Training, Behaviour Management Training or Breakaway Training is designed to help all participants feel more capable and confident in their ability to manage challenging situations, knowing that their interventions are legal, safe and compliant with national guidance.

The techniques used follow the positive handling approach outlined by the National Federation for Personal Safety (NFPS), which have been risk assessed and tested for their effectiveness, safety and ease of learning.

Who should complete the course?

This course is beneficial for all professionals working in schools, colleges, with youth and nursery groups, e.g. teachers, learning and support assistants, Deputy Heads, Head Teachers and Governors.

Our typical groups are teams of up to, or multiples of, 12 staff. We can, by arrangement, train whole-school groups.

Course Details

Aims

To give delegates more confidence in working with challenging situations, enabling them to intervene using a variety of de-escalation techniques and approved interventions, to promote a safe environment for all people involved.

How to physically protect and positively safeguard themselves, their colleagues and their pupils during risky situations
How to recognise the importance of Positive Behaviour Support plans and Positive Handling Plans for pupils
How to identify, reduce and avoid the risks inherent in Restraint/ Positive Handling interventions
Specific physical skills and tactical principles for how to achieve Positive Handling Control, Escort and Restraint in the pursuit of Non-Harmful Control of Children and Young People
