Stress and absence from work due to stress has been on the increase in the UK for many years now, and there is little sign of any real change.
The pace of life and the constant bombardment of information is enough to deal with. But couple that with the economic stresses that have been put on businesses and, therefore, on their employees and there’s really no wonder the UK loses so many man-hours to stress related illnesses.
And that’s the thing isn’t it. Stress is bad enough on its own. It causes people to behave in ways they wouldn’t normally. But stress actually causes the immune system to decrease in effectiveness and leads to people becoming physically ill in other ways.
On top of the physical illness, stress has a genuinely negative effect on mental health.
It really is a no win situation.
What can be done?
Luckily there are steps employers can take to protect their workforce. One of those measures is to have stress management training courses available to teach employees how to look after their own mental health and combat stress at the first opportunity.
Here at Ascend, we are passionate about helping people to help themselves. We know just what a difference our training can make to an individual. Being able to identify the early signs of feeling stressed in yourself is a very powerful tool. Particularly when you know how to deal with that feeling and mange it.
