FAQ

What is safeguarding children?
Safeguarding children involves proactive measures to protect them from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. It encompasses creating safe environments, promoting well-being, and ensuring that children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care. The NSPCC defines safeguarding as “the action that is taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm.”
Who is responsible for the safeguarding of children?
Safeguarding is a collective responsibility. In schools, every staff member, from teachers to administrative personnel, has a duty to protect children from harm. The Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) oversees safeguarding policies and procedures, ensuring that concerns are addressed promptly. School governors and leadership teams are also responsible for creating and maintaining the school’s safeguarding policy.
What first aid training is required in schools?
Schools must provide adequate first aid provisions based on a risk assessment. This includes having trained personnel, appropriate equipment, and facilities. First aid must be available during school hours and during off-site activities.
What are the fire safety requirements for schools?
Schools are required to adhere to the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. This includes conducting regular fire risk assessments, maintaining fire detection and alarm systems, and ensuring staff and students are trained in evacuation procedures.
What mandatory training must school staff complete?
Mandatory training for school staff varies based on roles but generally includes:
Safeguarding Children Level 1 and 2
Health and Safety Awareness
Fire Safety
COSHH Awareness
Display Screen Equipment (DSE) training
These trainings ensure that staff are equipped to provide a safe and supportive learning environment.
