NFPS BTEC

Also referred to as Management of Violence and Aggression (MoVA) or Management of Violence and Aggression (MVA) training, this PMVA course is aimed at care workers and comprises conflict resolution, breakaway, physical restraint and physical interventions.

The three-day course is aimed at low risk care workers, while the four-day course is for those who work within high risk environments.

Course Details

Aims

To give low risk healthcare workers the knowledge and skills required to de-escalate potential aggressive situations and be able to know how to respond in a reasonable manner.

Outcomes

Delegates will have the skills to:

  • Describe common causes of conflict
  • Describe two forms of communication, i.e. verbal and non-verbal
  • Give examples of communication breakdowns
  • Explain three examples of communication models that can assist conflict
  • Understand patterns of behaviour that may be encountered during different interactions
  • Explain the different warning and danger signs
  • Give examples of impact factors
  • Describe the use of distance when dealing with conflict
  • Explain the use of ‘reasonable force’ as it applies to conflict management
  • Describe different methods for dealing with possible conflict situations

By the end of the course, delegates will have been helped to:

  • Become more confident about dealing with violence and aggression by identifying types of behaviour and triggers to violent aggressive behaviour
  • Know the health and safety issues regarding violence and aggression in the workplace
  • Recognise and understand how their own body language and methods of communication can affect others
  • Realise that defusing and de-escalating situations are by far the best way of dealing with a potentially violent or aggressive situation

Course Content

Delegates will study the Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Award in Disengagement and Non-restrictive Physical Intervention Skills (QCF), which includes:

  • Unit 1: Law and Risks of Physical Intervention when working with Young People and Vulnerable Adults (6 hours);
  • Unit 3: Disengagement and Non-restrictive Physical Intervention Methods (8 hours); and
  • Unit 4: Restrictive Physical Intervention Methods (8 hours)
